DESCRIPTION:Digital cameras and dental photography are a critical piece of today’s modern dental practice. It can be intimidating and overwhelming to think about and learn\, especially for those who have not used a dSLR camera before. However\, by understanding how to take quality pictures\, you will increase case acceptance\, enhance the value of your practice\, and greatly improve the level of service you can provide for your patients. High quality digital photographs are extremely helpful for excellent laboratory communication\, patient education\, diagnosis\, treatment planning\, and documentation.In this course\, we invite dentists of all skill levels to attend\, whether you’ve never held a camera before or want to take your skill up a notch. Assistants and staff are also invited to attend with the doctor. We believe quality dental photography is a critical component to the modern practice\, and this course will answer your questions and increase your confidence in this important skill.If you are looking to purchase a dSLR camera before the course\, or have any questions regarding your current camera and it’s applicability for this course\, please contact the CE office beforehand so we can help you decide.Hands-On Workshop Exercises: \n\n\n\n\nPortrait\, close-up and intra-oral photography\n\n\n\nLab work and artistic photography\n\n\n\n\nParticipant Requirements:We will have a limited number of cameras available for the course to practice with upon request. SUMMARY:Preservation of Alveolar Bone Dimensions in Extraction Sockets
DESCRIPTION:The exponential growth in implant dentistry has resulted in the development of a number of new and important procedures. The preservation of the dimensions of the alveolar ridge after tooth removal is crucial for the successful placement of dental implants. The scientific evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of bone grafts and guided bone regeneration in preserving and regenerating hard tissue in extraction sockets is overwhelming. This hands-on workshop uses a pig jaw model where participants will practice the regenerative treatment of fresh extraction sockets\, including the selection and use of bone grafts\, membranes and biological wound dressings. Additionally\, participants will be taught flap elevation and suturing techniques that may be used in conjunction with ridge preservation procedures.

DESCRIPTION:Sinus floor augmentation has become a routine procedure that enhances the outcome of dental implants placed in the posterior maxilla when insufficient bone volume is found. The question remains\, what is the best choice of donor material to use for sinus grafting? This course will not only provide hands-on laboratory session to familiarize the participant with the surgical techniques\, but also reveal the science behind selection of the appropriate donor material. DESCRIPTION:For over a century hypnosis has been used as an effective method for the treatment of many different issues in medicine and dentistry. In the field of orofacial pain\, we are often faced with issues whose etiology can often\, to say the least\, be profoundly puzzling. From Bruxism and Gagging to TMD and Migraine\, Hypnotherapy has been time tested and scientifically proven to be an effective adjunct to traditional therapy. While not using it to get the patient to walk like a chicken and quack like a duck\, we can now effectively decrease anxiety\, improve communication and rapport\, diminish pain and improve treatment compliance. This course will take place over 2 days. The attendees will learn the art of hypnotherapy from simple induction techniques\, to deepening procedures through to suggestion methods. Each attendee will receive hands on training experiencing the state of hypnosis as well as how to help their fellow students experience it for themselves. Each student will leave this course with a very effective addition to their toolbox. This is becoming more relevant in the setting of the current opiate epidemic\, as acupuncture provides a non-pharmacologic approach to reduce pain. This is also important in the realms of sleep medicine and orofacial pain where pharmacotherapy is riddled with a high side effect burden and risk of abuse. Despite the WHO having recommended acupuncture for treatments on headache\, facial pain\, neuralgia and insomnia\, few programs are available for dentists who wish to seek training.  \n\n\n\nUCLA School of Dentistry is offering a unique\, evidence-based program to train dentists in the basics of dental acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory. The dentist has a major role in the recognition and management of patients with these conditions. In addition\, the guidelines from the American Dental Association (ADA) indicate that the dentist should be trained to recognize\, facilitate the diagnosis of sleep apnea\, and be well versed in oral appliance therapy. \n\n\n\nCourse lectures are designed to review the aspects of sleep that are relevant to the practicing dentist and are reinforced with demonstration as well as hands-on experience in the clinic. This involves the examination process\, the process of obtaining a bite registration for fabrication of an oral appliance and the delivery of the oral appliance. This course includes the opportunity to fabricate and deliver an oral appliance for the participant. This is not required to take part in the course\, but highly recommended *. \n\n\n\nThis course provides the didactic and clinical knowledge for the dentist to become a productive and successful participant in the management of SRBD\, with the focus primarily on patients within their existing practice. \n\n\n\nThe course is designed to cover all aspects of sleep medicine and sleep disorders through lectures from various specialists. The lectures are designed to review all aspects of sleep that are relative to the practicing dentist and are reinforced with demonstration as well as hands-on experience in the clinic. This involves the examination process\, the process of obtaining a bite registration for fabrication of an oral appliance and the delivery of the oral appliance. The lectures and discussion will involve how the dentist can be a productive and successful participant in the management of sleep disorders\, and specifically SRBD. DESCRIPTION:3 Session Course        \n\n\n\nApril 20-21\, 2024  (in person @ UCLA)   Saturday 8:00am-5:00pm and Sunday 8:30am-1:00pmMay 10-11  (online via Zoom)  Friday 8:00am-4:00pm and Saturday 8:00am-12:00pm June 8-9  (in person @ UCLA)  Saturday 8:30am-5:00pm and Sunday 8:30am-1:00pm \n\n\n\nThe interest in Dental Sleep Medicine (DSM) has grown and involves not only oral appliances for Sleep Related Breathing Disorders (SRBD)\, such as sleep apnea and snoring\, but also involves sleep bruxism\, orofacial pain including TMD and related medical conditions. The dentist has a major role in the recognition and management of patients with these conditions. In addition\, the guidelines from the American Dental Association (ADA) indicate that the dentist should be trained to recognize\, facilitate the diagnosis of sleep apnea\, and be well versed in oral appliance therapy. \n\n\n\nCourse lectures are designed to review the aspects of sleep that are relevant to the practicing dentist and are reinforced with demonstration as well as hands-on experience in the clinic. This involves the examination process\, the process of obtaining a bite registration for fabrication of an oral appliance and the delivery of the oral appliance. This course includes the opportunity to fabricate and deliver an oral appliance for the participant. This is not required to take part in the course\, but highly recommended *. \n\n\n\nThis course provides the didactic and clinical knowledge for the dentist to become a productive and successful participant in the management of SRBD\, with the focus primarily on patients within their existing practice. \n\n\n\nThe course is designed to cover all aspects of sleep medicine and sleep disorders through lectures from various specialists. The lectures are designed to review all aspects of sleep that are relative to the practicing dentist and are reinforced with demonstration as well as hands-on experience in the clinic. This involves the examination process\, the process of obtaining a bite registration for fabrication of an oral appliance and the delivery of the oral appliance. The lectures and discussion will involve how the dentist can be a productive and successful participant in the management of sleep disorders\, and specifically SRBD. The expanding definition of DSM will be explored\, as this involves sleep bruxism and all aspects of orofacial pain. \n\n\n\nThis course is designed such that the participant will be optimally competent and be considered qualified in the use of oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea and snoring. This is of particular importance given that Orofacial Pain is now a dental specialty that also involves sleep. Anyone practicing DSM needs to be able to also practice at the same standard of care equivalent to a specialist\, and this course is intended to accomplish this.
